Drinking Water Compliance

To protect citizens’ health, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has set national safety standards for drinking water. While the USEPA and state governments set and enforce standards, water suppliers – whether public or private – have a direct responsibility for the quality of the water that flows from your tap.

American Water takes that responsibility seriously. In addition to working closely with the USEPA and state authorities to ensure that the water we provide customers meets or surpasses federal and state safety standards, our researchers help the USEPA develop its standards and regulations. When it comes to complying with strict federal regulations for delivering clean, quality drinking water, we’ve consistently scored among the highest of all water companies. Currently, we score greater than 99% for drinking water compliance – a fact that we are immensely proud of – and according to USEPA statistics on violations, American Water‘s performance is far better than the industry average.  In fact, in 2009, American Water was 43 times better than the industry average for compliance with drinking water quality standards (Maximum Contaminant Levels) and 81 times better for compliance with drinking water monitoring and reporting requirements.

We also share the USEPA’s belief that it is important to educate customers on drinking water, specifically the water quality of their system. As such, we frequently engage in customer education initiatives, in addition to mailing Consumer Confidence Reports to our customers annually.
