Approach To Compliance American Water systems are required to comply with a number of federal and state regulations, developed under the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Water Act, the Clean Air Act and other federal and state statutes. To ensure compliance with applicable regulations and track our environmental stewardship efforts, American Water employs an Environmental Management Plan system in tandem with an internal audit program. Environmental Management Plans American Water uses Environmental Management Plans to outline the various regulatory requirements and environmental stewardship opportunities at each of our facilities. Environmental management plans are developed at the system level and include facility-specific requirements and designation of the employees responsible for implementation. Environmental management plans are reviewed quarterly and updated as needed to include new requirements and changes in responsibility. Internal Environmental Audit Program Stewardship of the environment is a core value at American Water. However, capturing, treating and distributing water to our 15 million customers is an environmentally challenging endeavor, given the sensitive nature of the natural resource we supply. That is why we look to improve our environmental footprint across all areas of our business. American Water’s internal environmental audit program is designed to provide a consistent, independent assessment of the company’s Environmental Management Plans, procedures and physical facilities. The audit program includes both drinking water and wastewater services, and is intended to proactively identify potential vulnerabilities, allowing us to expediently address them. American Water is presently finalizing the development of our own internal audit tool to support this effort. Our goal is to audit all regulated and non-regulated operations at least once every five years (or more frequently, if possible). Over the last 2 years, American Water performed over 175 audits covering almost 250 treatment plants at almost 150 drinking water and wastewater systems.
