Environmental Stewardship and Innovation
Access to clean water has emerged as one of the most important challenges of the 21st century. Everyone from environmental and business leaders to legislators and citizens are engaging in discussions to learn more about the protection and stewardship of this finite natural resource that is often taken for granted.
American Water recognizes the serious challenges involved in meeting the demand for water in a way that is sustainable into the future. We are committed to improving the environmental performance of our own operations to ensure we deliver reliable water and wastewater services that are respectful of the environment.
American Water’s Environmental Stewardship program focuses on issues that are not directly related to achieving compliance with environmental regulations, but present opportunities to increase public health protection or improve environmental conditions. This includes initiatives such as global warming and climate change, biodiversity, beneficial reuse of residuals, and conservation of natural resources.
Our Innovation Development Process is an initiative designed to drive innovation into the water utility business. It leverages the company's position and expertise as the nation's largest water and wastewater services provider to develop, test and produce new technologies for industry use. It combines American Water's research and development, technical expertise, and infrastructure assets with innovations from within the company and from business partners to create greater efficiencies in the areas of water reuse, desalination, wastewater operations and bio-energy.
