Being a good neighbor is part of our mission at American Water. We are dedicated to Illinois and demonstrate that commitment every day with programs that support the communities we serve.
Pharmaceutical Disposal Programs - By partnering with the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA), Illinois American Water is working to protect our watersheds and educate the public about proper disposal of pharmaceuticals. As a member of the IEPA's Medication Education Disposal Solution program, Illinois American Water collaborates with environmentalists, pharmacists, water utilities and healthcare providers to develop local pharmaceutical disposal programs. The group also works together to promote proper pharmaceutical disposal practices. To learn more or to find a disposal location near you, please visit http://www.epa.state.il.us/medication-disposal/.
The Clean Water Celebration - is a joint effort between The Sun Foundation, an arts and science education group in the Tri-County area, and the Rivers Project, a high school program coordinated by Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Hundreds of high school students from the Rivers Project were joined by thousands of middle school students from Central Illinois for two days of presentations, exhibits, art, science, theater and song.
In Champaign County, Illinois American Water supports the Mahomet Aquifer Consortium with the mission to further study the Mahomet aquifer and to develop options for the management of this valuable resource.
The Lincoln, Illinois community has been celebrating Lincoln Heritage Days and the Balloon Fesitval for years and so has Illinois American Water by being a sponsor. Corporate Sponsorship is important in supporting many of the communities we serve, while our employees also volunteer their own time to these special events.
We have been participating in IHSA’s March Madness for over 10 years. Events during March Madness include the annual Special Needs Day. Dozens of area schools and hundreds of special needs students enjoy this day that is set aside just for them to play basketball, learn cheers and enjoy a day of games.
The National Theatre for Children is part of Illinois American Water’s youth education program. Illinois American Water has worked to enhance water education in area classrooms. The Theatre for Children is another extension of that effort bringing water and conservation education to students. The shows share information on water education, water usage tips and pollution control with thousands of Illinois students in a fun, interactive atmosphere.
Illinois American Water also supports healthcare organizations like the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Illinois with annual contributions and local support.
But Corporate Social Responsibility does not end there. We take our efforts to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America, local Jaycees organizations, Salvation Army and more. Many of our employees give their own time to organizations like Special Olympics and Big Brother Big Sister and carry our Corporate Social Responsibility mission into the classrooms with Junior Achievement.
