The Central Kentucky Water Supply Solution

According to the Kentucky Public Service Commission, "Something has to be done to solve Central Kentucky's water supply shortfall."

Kentucky American Water proactively identified a solution and is building it todaya new 20 million gallon per day water treatment plant, a 3 million gallon water storage tank, a booster pump station, and a 31 mile, 42-inch underground pipeline connecting the treatment plant to the company's existing distribution center in Fayette County.

By investing in this solution, we are investing in future of Kentucky's water today; ensuring that Kentucky has the necessary resources to meet future water demands of all its customers.

Why this solution is necessary

Without the Kentucky American Water supply solution, it is estimated that in 2010 there would have been a more than 10  million gallon per day, or a nearly 14%, gap between the amount of water customers need and the amount of water they would receive. By 2020 the estimate would have grown to a shortfall of nearly 17 million gallons per day, or over 20%, and by 2030, more than 21 million gallons per day or 25%.

What does that mean to our customers

On a day where maximum capacity is needed, the customers would not have sufficient water for their needs. To make matters worst, the source water supply, the Kentucky River at Pool 9, is also vulnerable to drought. If the source experienced a drought during the height of the deficit described above, the estimated shortfall would double for customers in the area.  It was the combination of the two deficits that led to Kentucky American Water's decision to propose the solutions-based 20 million gallon per day plant at the new location.

"Kentucky American Water is committed to providing quality water service to our customers."
