Backflow Requirements

At Kentucky American Water, we take great pride in providing high quality drinking water to our customers. In order to do that, we are required by the Kentucky Division of Water, Division of Plumbing, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), to have some of our customers install approved backflow prevention devices on their water service line prior to receiving water service. Backflow prevention devices are designed and installed with the objective of preventing the potential reversal of flow back into the potable water system. These assemblies keep you, your family, and the public's drinking water safe from backflow through cross connections.

All nonresidential customers are required to install a backflow prevention device to their water system. Nonresidential customers include dwellings which have five or more apartments, are multileveled and are jointly metered. Any service line to a farm, other than a residence, is also considered to be a nonresidential customer and is required to install a backflow prevention device.

It should be noted that a backflow prevention device will reduce your water pressure causing a decrease in the available flow of water. This pressure reduction will vary with the type and size of the device installed. You may also need to install a thermal expansion system to alleviate any internal pressure buildup in the backflow system.

For your convenience there is an attached list matching approved devices to various types of nonresidential customers. Simply match the intended use to the recommended type of device, either a Reduced Pressure Zone (RP) or Double Check (DC).

Once the approved backflow prevention device has been installed, please complete the installation and test reports and return them to our office.
