Research

We’ve spent almost 125 years learning and growing in the water and wastewater industry. Our cutting edge research is at the core of our know-how, and we are proud to bring our expertise to the cities and communities we serve across the country.

The testing done in our quality control and testing laboratory in Belleville, Illinois sets the standard for water utilities, and is truly ahead of its time. The lab has a history of being on the forefront of monitoring, testing, identifying and controlling contaminants before specific federal regulations are put in place. Our highly sophisticated analytical and research capabilities are why the United States Environmental Protection Agency regularly taps into our lab and our research team to help develop federal drinking water standards and regulations.

In 1981, we established a formal research and development program, with the goal of improving water quality and operational effectiveness in all areas of our business. Our research experts are located in two of our New Jersey locations, our Corporate Headquarters in Voorhees and at our water treatment plant in Delran. Our lab in Belleville, Illinois, supports research through sophisticated testing and analysis. Since its inception, our research and development program has evolved to become a leading water-related research program, achieving advancements in the science of drinking water and wastewater.

Our strength as an industry leader comes from our expertise. On the American Water team, you’ll find the top innovators in the industry. Scientists, engineers, and technicians all come together for one purpose – to provide high-quality water and wastewater service to our customers everywhere.
