Developer Services Service Extension Process Overview

The following is a summary of New Jersey American Water Developer Services Process. More information can be obtained by contacting your local developer services professional or by e-mailing New Jersey American Water Developer Services at njaw.developerservices@amwater.com.

Customers who select New Jersey American Water as a water resource partner will work with a designated project manager from the beginning through project completion. A brief summary of the process that will be followed is described below.

Pre-application Stage

  • Inquire if your project can be served by New Jersey American Water.
  • Obtain a main extension application and other customer resource information
  • Schedule a pre-application meeting.
  • Review available system capacities.
  • Review design requirements and responsibilities.

Application Stage

  • Submit the application.
  • Submit all supporting project information such as: designs, demand estimates, easements, etc.
  • Submit an application deposit (effective January 1, 2006)
  • Submit a Smart Growth certification, if required.

Technical Review Stage

  • The project design and the application will be reviewed for: compliance with design standards; adequate supply capacity; hydraulic capacity and constructability.
  • A determination will be made if the Project requires a water main extension permit from the NJDEP
  • If required, the NJDEP permit application will be endorsed following approval of the plans. The applicant is required to submit all permits for the Project.

Agreement Stage

  • Cost Estimates will be developed.
  • Extension Deposit Agreements will be prepared and executed.
  • A Deposit will be submitted by the applicant for the cost of the extensions.
  • Easement agreements will be finalized and executed.

Bidding and Construction Stage

  • The project will be bid in accordance with Company standards.
  • Cost estimates will be revised, if required.
  • Additional deposits will be collected if required.
  • The project will be released for construction, if all conditions are met.
  • The project will be built, inspected, tested and released to be placed into service, if all conditions are met.

Close-Out Stage

  • Final costs will be determined and reconciled.
  • Reimbursements will be made or a balance due will be collected depending upon reconciliation.
  • A survey of your Developer Services experience will be solicited.

Refund Stage

  • Projects that are eligible for refunds will get refunds based upon customer revenues as required.
