Community Programs

Being a good neighbor is part of our mission at American Water. We are dedicated to Pennsylvania and do make sure we show it.

Each year, we assist low-income customers through our H20 Help to Others Program®. Customers who qualify may receive grants of up to $500, a discount on their service fee and water-saving devices and education on how to use water wisely.

American Water also takes an active part in the communities. We support environmental and educational initiatives related to water, from watershed clean-up efforts to educational programs focused on drinking water and source water protection. Below are just a few examples:

Educating Students at our Wonderful World of Water at Summer Camps
Sponsored by Pennsylvania American Water and organized in cooperation with the Pennsylvania Resources Council, two “Wonderful World of Water Day Camps” were held in Western Pennsylvania--one in suburban Pittsburgh and one at the Jennings Environmental Center in Butler County. The day campers explored water and watershed basics, learned how human impact on the land affects water quality in our rivers and streams, and discovered solutions to water pollution.

Educating our Teachers

Pennsylvania American Water participates in Keystone College’s Watershed Explorers program. The program is a week-long watershed class for teachers across the state. We take this opportunity to share information on watershed management initiatives and the water treatment process.

Expressing the Importance of Watershed Protection Through Art
Open to fifth-grade classes in schools served by Pennsylvania American Water, the contest encourages students to utilize their artistic talents to express the importance of protecting Pennsylvania's watersheds and water resources. As part of the entry, students are asked to write a short description of how watershed protection impacts them personally. It’s a fun and creative way for students to learn about he importance of protecting our most valuable natural resource: water. This year, we received over 450 entries from students across the state!

Supporting Local and Global Needs

American Water has named United Way and Water for People its Charities of Choice. Each year, American Water employees from across the nation participate in a nationwide campaign for these organizations. Last year, we raised $556,840 for United Way and $208,000 for Water for People nationwide.

Environmental Grant Program
Another example of how we give back to the community is our innovative, environmental grant program, which provides funding for community-based projects that improve, protect and restore drinking water supplies and surrounding watersheds.
