Community Giving

Investing in Our Community

In fact, in Tennessee alone, we have invested approximately $121 million in the last 15 years to improve service to our customers. Every year, we deliver system improvements to the communities we serve – from extending water mains to replacing meters and hydrants to upgrading plant equipment. We also invest in major projects to improve service to customers. These investments will help us continue to provide high quality water service. To keep customers up to date on project progress, we post regular updates at www.amwater.com.

In the past few years, we’ve built two, one-million gallon water storage tanks and one 1.25 million gallon water storage tank to provide improved service and fire safety capacity. We also invested in the redesign of the 21st Century Riverfront Development by relocating and increasing the size of existing water mains to accommodate the growing needs of the community.

In 2010, we are installing approximately 1,000 feet of 12-inch main in Lookout Mountain.  This main installation will replace the current 90-year old eight-inch and 12-inch main which is the sole supply to the Lookout Mountain residents.  This nearly $1.6 million project will allow continued growth and reliability of service to the residents.  Also in 2010, we will complete an approximately $6.7 million upgrade on the Citico Treatment Plant.  This upgrade will allow for future US EPA regulations and our continued commitment to deliver high-quality water to our customers.

We are committed to delivering excellent service that our customers depend upon at an exceptional value. One gallon of tap water still costs less than a penny and remains a great value when compared to other utility services. With few exceptions, water service remains the lowest utility bill that consumers pay each month.

We focus our community investments in four key areas:

Water and the Environment:
Innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect our watersheds and our communities’ surface and groundwater.

Water and Healthy Living:
Efforts that contribute to healthy communities by promoting access to safe water and sanitation, educating customers on the health benefits of water and encouraging good hygiene practices.

Environmental Education:
Educational programs which provide information about water conservation, water and wastewater treatment, the water cycle, watershed protection and the environment.

Community Sustainability:
Projects that meet a definitive, sustainable community need, preferably aligned with American Water’s core business, and which enrich the lives of the residents who live and work in the communities we serve.

We recognize the serious challenges of climate change, including the growing need to conserve and protect our water resources. We believe in investing in innovative programs that align with our core business of water and wastewater service, and are committed to working with community partners to develop sustainable solutions to local environmental issues.
