Welcome To Virginia American Water

Virginia American Water is your local water company. We’re the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing safe, reliable water and wastewater services to approximately 339,000 people in Alexandria, Dale City, Hopewell and the Northern Neck. Our 119 employees, including water quality specialists, distribution and field service personnel, plant operators, meter readers, and administrative support specialists, carry out the company’s foremost responsibility of providing safe, reliable water and wastewater service to our customers around the clock.

Our team of experts continuously monitor, maintain and upgrade our facilities to ensure that they operate efficiently and meet all regulatory standards. This requires investing in our infrastructure. In fact, during the five-year period
from 2010 through 2014, we invested more than $72 million in capital improvements. From replacing aging water mains, to installing advanced metering technology, to enhancing our treatment capabilities that improve efficiency and reliability, the investments we make help ensure that we are well positioned to continue to meet customer and public safety needs in the communities we serve. In 2014 we replaced over 12,400 feet of aging water main and replaced a 2.5 million gallon clearwell.

In Virginia, the State Corporation Commission (SCC) sets the rate-setting rules and we carefully follow them. Their regulations are what help to ensure everyone is receiving quality water service at a fair price. All increases in service rates are directly related to the cost of providing high-quality service and are subjected to a public review process and approval by the SCC.

Virginia American Water also follows strict regulations mandated by the Safe Drinking Water Act, which was created by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and enforced by the Virginia Department of Health. These regulations assure you have high quality, safe drinking water. Because we work in cooperation with the USEPA to help in the development of national drinking water standards, we are often years ahead of the industry in implementing regulations.

Virginia American Water is committed to delivering high-quality water to all of our customers. In Virginia, we conduct about 7,500 tests per year for about 100 potential contaminants, checking drinking water quality at every stage of the water treatment and delivery process.
