Issue Corrected – Pine Ridge Well 5 Total Manganese Levels

Historically, water sample results for Pine Ridge Well 5 have shown elevated levels of total manganese. The level of total manganese found in the untreated water in Well 5 averages 0.4 mg/L. According to EPA guidelines, water that contains total manganese above a recently established lifetime health advisory level (HAL) of 0.3 mg/L may be a serious health concern. Additionally, it is advised that for infants younger than 6 months, the lifetime HAL of 0.3 mg/L be used even for an acute exposure of 10 days.

Pine Ridge residents have been notified since August 2019 of the elevated total manganese in Well 5 and the need to run the well to meet system demand. Our engineering team responded by designing a manganese treatment facility to reduce manganese levels below the HAL.

Our new $2 million treatment facility at Well 5 consists of a new filtration system that removes the manganese from drinking water.  The new filters and the ancillary equipment needed for proper operation are all housed in a new 1,440 square foot building adjacent to Well 5.  Additionally, a new emergency generator has been installed to provide backup power in the event of a power outage.

Recent operation and testing at the Well 5 treatment facility resulted in total manganese levels entering the distribution system below the EPA Health Advisory level of 0.3 mg/L.

The drinking water is now compliant with all regulatory drinking water requirements and can be used for all purposes.  The alternate water supply at the hydrant located at the Pine Ridge Clubhouse will be removed and will no longer be available for use.
