We’re proud to be your new wastewater service provider.

New Jersey American Water completed the acquisition of Long Hill Township’s wastewater system on October 22, 2020. We have proudly been the Township’s water service provider, and we look forward to providing you with the same level of quality service to meet your wastewater needs.

You’re in good hands.

Our focus is to provide you with safe, reliable water and wastewater service each and every day – and we have the people and technologies in place to get the job done right. As our new wastewater customer, we want to share with you some information about the services we provide, as well as some changes that will be taking place over time.

About your rates.

As part of the sale agreement, New Jersey American Water committed to adopting the Township’s 2018 wastewater rates. Those rates will remain in place for a minimum of two years and will not increase more than nine percent in total over the following three years. New Jersey American Water is regulated by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and any future proposed changes in wastewater rates will be subject to extensive review and approval. For more information about rates, click here.

We’ll be transitioning you to monthly billing.

Previously, Long Hill Township billed annually for wastewater service. The last bill you received from the Township covered services through December 31, 2020. New Jersey American Water will begin billing you for wastewater service in January 2021. At that time, we will transition you to monthly billing. This is preferred by many customers, because providing 12 smaller bills instead of one larger bill makes it easier for customers to include the cost of water and wastewater service in their monthly household budgets.

Here’s how the transition in billing will work.

Since you have already paid the Township for wastewater service through the end of 2020, you will not incur wastewater charges from New Jersey American Water this year. You will see line items for wastewater service on your bill; however, those line items will show a zero dollar charge through the end of 2020. In January 2021, we will begin to bill you for wastewater service. Your January wastewater charges will be prorated and will cover wastewater services from January 1, 2021, through your January water meter reading date. This bill will be due and payable to New Jersey American Water. You will be billed on a monthly basis thereafter.

Account set up for water and wastewater will be the same (Especially important to tenants, landlords and property owners). If you are already a water customer of New Jersey American Water, we will be adding the wastewater charges to the water bill starting in January of 2021 to provide one combined bill. If the water and wastewater bills were not mailed to the same location or person previously, moving forward, we’re mailing the combined bill based on how the water account is set up. For example, if you’re a tenant, and you receive the bill for water service, but your landlord pays the wastewater bill, beginning in January, your bill will include both the water and wastewater charges. We recommend that tenants and landlords work together to determine how to manage this transition.

Additional benefits of being a New Jersey American Water customer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my rates changing as a result of this acquisition?

As part of the sale agreement, New Jersey American Water committed to adopting the Township’s 2018 wastewater rates. Those rates will remain in place for a minimum of two years and will not increase more than nine percent in total over the following three years. New Jersey American Water is regulated by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and any future proposed changes in wastewater rates will be subject to extensive review and approval. Please note: All other fees for Long Hill Township wastewater customers will be in accordance with the New Jersey American Water tariff approved by the NJ Board of Public Utilities.

Will future rate changes have to undergo regulatory or governmental approvals?

Yes. New Jersey American Water is a regulated utility subject to governmental review and approval of any changes in rates. Wastewater rates are regulated by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJBPU). The process for any future changes in rates will be open, transparent and comply with all regulations.

Will I continue to be billed annually for wastewater service?

No. Beginning in January 2021, New Jersey American Water will be transitioning customers to a monthly billing cycle. Customers will receive 12 smaller bills instead of one large bill a year. Monthly billing should make it easier for customers, especially those on fixed incomes, to include the cost of wastewater service in their monthly household budgets.

Here’s how it will work: Previously, the Township billed annually for wastewater service. The last bill you received from the Township covered services through December 31, 2020. Since you have already paid the Township for wastewater service through the end of 2020, you will not incur wastewater charges from New Jersey American Water in 2020. You will begin to see line items for wastewater service on your bill at the time the acquisition closes; however, the line items will show a zero dollar charge through the end of 2020. In January 2021, we will begin to bill you for wastewater service. Your January wastewater charges will be prorated and will cover wastewater services from January 1, 2021, through your January water meter reading date.

If I have a past due amount with the Long Hill Township, who do I pay that to?

  • Long Hill Township wastewater bill: Any past due amounts for wastewater service that were billed by the Long Hill Township should be paid to Long Hill Township.
  • New Jersey American Water water/wastewater bills: Any past due balance for New Jersey American Water’s water and/or wastewater service should be mailed to us. Long Hill Township cannot accept payments on behalf of New Jersey American Water.

Can I pay my sewer bill in person at the Long Hill Township office?

No. Long Hill Township cannot accept payments on our behalf. If you prefer to pay in person, New Jersey American Water does have agreements with several authorized payment locations across the state. Click here to find the nearest location to you.

If I am a metered water customer, how is my wastewater usage calculated?

New Jersey American Water agreed to adopt the Long Hill Township’s 2018 Rates along with the calculation associated with the usage rate. Therefore, former Long Hill Township wastewater customers’ usage will be calculated using the actual water usage for the six winter months preceding the billing year.

For example, in the billing year of 2020, the gallons are determined from the six months January through March and October through December 2019. The months excluded are: April through September 2019.

Do you still offer Long Hill Township’s Senior Discount program?

New Jersey American Water agreed to continue the Township’s senior citizen discount program for all residents age 65 and older who were enrolled in the Township’s program as of the Closing Date. This $40.00 annual deduction will be applied in equal monthly installments of $3.33 per month to eligible customers. As New Jersey American Water does not have a senior discount program, new applicants will not be accepted and the deduction will phase out upon any change of ownership of the account. We do offer Customer Assistance Programs for customers who qualify.

I’m on a fixed income. Do you have any programs that assist low-income customers?

For nearly a decade, New Jersey American Water has been assisting residential customers who qualify through its H2O Help to Others Program™  For more information or to see if you qualify, click here, or contact our program administrator New Jersey SHARES, at 1-877-652-9426 (1-877-NJAWH2O) or visit www.njshares.org.

Please note: If you are already receiving the senior discount program, you can choose to keep the senior discount, or you can see if you are eligible for our H2O Help to Others customer assistance program. You can only receive one discount program on your account.

General Questions

How do you apply for a new sewer service?

Long Hill Township has been on a voluntary sewer connection ban for many years because wastewater flow at the wastewater treatment plant routinely exceeds its permitted capacity. New Jersey American Water is committed to addressing these issues in a five-year capital improvement plan.

While the sewer connection ban continues to be in place, New Jersey American Water is taking sewer service applications for customers that want to express interest in connecting to the sewer system when the ban is lifted (this can take up to five years).

Does New Jersey American Water plan to invest in Long Hill Township’s wastewater system?

Yes. We believe in investing in our infrastructure. We continually evaluate our systems and facilities, prioritize projects and then make necessary capital investments to improve service. In 2019 alone, we invested more than $375 million to improve the water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems. Locally, we plan to invest more than $13 million in our first five years of ownership, including much needed main rehabilitations or replacements, upgrades to at least two pump stations, improvements at the wastewater treatment plant and extension of sewer mains to previously unserved areas of the Township.
