American Water Charitable Foundation Awards $126,000 in Community Safety Grants

VOORHEES, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The American Water Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization created by American Water, the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, recently awarded $126,000 in community safety grants within 14 states in American Water’s regulated footprint.

“We are pleased to award community safety grants to these outstanding organizations,” said Debra Vernon, Manager, Corporate Responsibility and President of the American Water Charitable Foundation. “They are extremely resourceful and dedicated in meeting their missions to guard human health and safety, even amidst budget cuts and overall financial challenges. We believe it is important for us to offer assistance as they continue their efforts to enhance the overall safety of our communities.”

Vernon added, “American Water is strongly committed to ensuring the safety of our employees, customers and the communities we serve. These grants also help further support our efforts in keeping safety a top priority.”

The grant recipients, which received notification of their awards in December 2013, include the following:

California

  • The Monterey County Fire Training Officers Association will use its funds for firefighter training equipment.

Hawaii

  • The Honolulu Firefighters Foundation will utilize its award for general support to firefighters, community safety program(s) and fire prevention.

Illinois

  • The following Triad organizations will utilize the grant to reduce criminal victimization of senior citizens and monitoring devices for Alzheimer/Dementia patients:
    • Tazewell County Triad
    • Naperville & Lisle Township Triad
    • Whiteside County Senior Center
    • Peoria County Triad
    • Champaign County Triad SALT (Seniors And Law Enforcement Together) Council
    • DuPage County SALT Council

Indiana

  • Shelby Senior Services will use its award to install “knox boxes” for senior citizens (medical emergency buttons).
  • The Newburgh Volunteer Fire Department will purchase special washers & dryers to launder turnout gear to remove toxins absorbed during firefighting emergencies.

Iowa

  • The Clinton Fireman’s Association will use its grant to purchase Smart TVs for computer-based training for fire, EMS, rescue and hazmat personnel.

Kentucky

  • The Urban League of Lexington in Fayette County will use the funds for the Motivated All Day Everyday (MADE) program, a youth violence prevention program.
  • Habitat for Humanity in Lexington will purchase safety equipment for nine homes.

Maryland

  • The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, Inc. will buy 47 Motorola commander II remote speaker microphones for its portable radio fleet.

Michigan

  • The Public Schools of Calumet, Laurium & Keweenaw Foundation, Inc. will purchase radios for public school buses to use for inclement weather emergencies.

Missouri

  • The National Fire Safety Council will use the funds for education materials for Jefferson City schools via the local fire department.
  • River City Habitat for Humanity will purchase safety harnesses for local Habitat construction projects.
  • The Mexico 21st Century Fund will purchase smoke detectors for needy families.
  • The Southwest Missouri Community Alliance will purchase car seats for low income families.
  • The St. Joseph Youth Alliance will purchase bike helmets and home safety devices for low income families.
  • Trailnet will use the funds to provide bike safety classes.

New Jersey

  • The Woodland Community Development Corporation will purchase radios for the community’s Neighborhood Watch program.
  • The Dover-Brick Beach First Aid Squad will use its grant to purchase ambulance/lifesaving equipment.
  • The Bay Head Fire Company No. 1 will purchase firefighting equipment.
  • The Ortley Beach First Aid Squad will utilize its grant for ambulance/lifesaving equipment.
  • Sea Bright First Aid, Inc. will purchase ambulance/lifesaving equipment.
  • The Cooper Foundation will use its grant for ambulance/lifesaving equipment.

New York

  • The Friendship Engine and Hose Co, Inc. will purchase firefighting equipment.
  • East Rockaway Fire Department will utilize its grant for firefighting equipment.
  • The Volunteer and Exempt Firemen’s Benevolent Association of Malvern will purchase firefighting equipment with its grant.
  • The Wantagh Fire Department will use its grant for firefighting equipment.
  • The Sea Cliff Ambulance Fund will purchase ambulance/lifesaving equipment with its grant.
  • The North Bellmore Exempt Volunteer Fireman’s Benevolent Association will purchase firefighting equipment.

Pennsylvania

  • The Hancock Fire Company will use the grant to buy smoke and carbon monoxide detectors for needy families.
  • The Scranton Area Foundation will purchase three signal preemption devices for emergency vehicles.
  • The Volunteer Fire Company of Mt. Lebanon, Inc. will use the grant for an inline hard-wired communication system for confined space rescue operations (manholes, vaults and other confined spaces).

Virginia

  • The Alexandria Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. will purchase fire boat equipment, such as a large flow hose, manifold and various adaptors.

West Virginia

  • The Tri-State Fire Academy will purchase gas monitors and accoutrements for hazardous atmosphere detection.
  • The Princeton Rescue Squad will use its grant for a bariatric lifting chair and portable oxygen cylinder lift.
  • The Kanawha Putnam Emergency Planning Committee will use its funds for an emergency communication system upgrade.

The American Water Charitable Foundation selected 501(c)3 organizations that serve a greater part of the community such as police depts., fire depts., volunteer emergency services, emergency food or shelter groups, government entities, neighborhood watch groups, schools, etc.
