CAMDEN, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--American Water (NYSE: AWK), the nation’s largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company, held its companywide AmerICANs in Action! Month of Service employee volunteer event in September. More than 1,200 American Water employees stepped up to help their neighbors, participating in 90 different community volunteer projects and providing a record-breaking 5,000 hours of service.

“Our employees are fully dedicated to making the communities where we live and work better because we are there,” said Susan Story, president and chief executive officer. “We are committed to helping those we serve every day of the year, and our AmerICANs in Action! Month of Service is a great opportunity for American Water employees across the country to support our neighbors and customers.”

AmerICANs in Action! continues the company’s efforts to create a lasting, positive impact for the customers and the communities the company serves as part of its ongoing Corporate Responsibility program. In its eighth year, this effort encourages teams of employees across the U.S. to volunteer in the communities where they live and work.

Employees demonstrated a diverse range of skills through projects that included a watershed cleanup in Pennsylvania, a toy drive for a children’s hospital in Illinois, organizing and bagging lunches for the homeless in Kentucky, rejuvenating a park in Georgia, a park clean up in Missouri, assisting with a monthly food distribution in New York, landscaping in Indiana and a school walk-a-thon in California. We worked on over 14 projects in our new corporate home of Camden, NJ. Many employees also volunteered at animal shelters and food banks, while others teamed up with their local Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity and United Way.
