Water Main Improvement Projects Near the University of Kentucky Campus and Castlewood Park Begin in Lexington
Kentucky American Water has begun work on water main improvement projects in Lexington near the University of Kentucky’s campus and in the Castlewood Park neighborhood.
Approximately 3,500 linear feet of water main will be replaced along University Avenue, State Street and Crescent Avenue near the University of Kentucky’s campus. The project, which will total approximately $1.2 million in investment, involves upgrading existing water mains and valves that were originally installed in the 1920s. The new waterlines will improve flow and water quality for our customers in the area.
Approximately 4,500 linear feet of water main will be replaced along Wittland Lane, Glenn Place, Burnett Avenue and Avon Avenue in the Castlewood Park neighborhood. The project, which will total approximately $900,000 in investment, involves upgrading existing water mains and valves that were originally installed in the 1930s.This project will also include the replacement and reconnection of seven fire hydrants in the neighborhood.
These projects will impact traffic since construction will be in the roadway, and motorists are encouraged to be extra cautious when traveling through work zones for their own safety and for the safety of those working on the projects. The projects are scheduled to conclude by February 2021, depending on weather conditions and other construction factors.
These water main improvement projects are among approximately $8 million worth of efforts approved this year by the Kentucky Public Service Commission for Kentucky American Water’s new Qualified Infrastructure Program (QIP). The QIP enables the company to replace aging water system infrastructure at a quicker pace before it becomes potentially more problematic -more-and more costly to replace. QIP projects are paid for with the QIP fees collected through customers’ monthly water bills. The fee associated with this year’s program will add $.36 to the average monthly residential bill.
Kentucky American Water is committed to ongoing efforts to replace water system infrastructure as appropriate in order to provide quality, reliable water service for customers. In addition to QIP projects, the company invests approximately $25 million annually in capital improvements.
