Missouri American Water Continues Essential Work to Provide Safe and Reliable Drinking Water in St. Louis County Amidst COVID-19 Public Health Emergency

Pipeline replacements and other planned system improvements necessary to provide reliable water service

ST. LOUIS – Amidst the current COVID-19 public health emergency, Missouri American Water is continuing its essential work to provide safe and reliable drinking water to St. Louis County customers.

Missouri American Water has taken steps to continue its work safely and in accordance with all federal, state and local directives. Water utilities are part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s “critical infrastructure sectors,” as safe drinking water is critical to protecting public health.

“Our customers count on us every day to deliver safe, clean, and reliable water, which is why we’re continuing essential work to operate and maintain our system. This work includes the replacement of aging water mains that have a history of breaking and disrupting water service to customers,” said Debbie Dewey, President of Missouri American Water. “We thank the leadership of St. Louis County for recognizing the critical nature of our service and investment in protecting the public by allowing our work to continue.”

Missouri American Water plans to invest $93 million in water main replacement projects in St. Louis County in 2020. Ongoing St. Louis County projects of note include:

-Fee Fee Road in Maryland Heights, from Dorsett to Midland, where more than 2,400 feet of 1950s-era 8-inch main will be replaced over two phases with 12-inch PVC.
-South Central Avenue in Clayton, from Shaw Park Dr. to Carondelet Ave., where more than 1,200 feet of cast iron main from the 1960s will be replaced with PVC and upsized from 6 inches to 12 inches ahead of a city of Clayton road project.
-Washington Avenue in University City, from N Big Bend Blvd. to Wellesley Ave., replacing more than 2,500 feet of 1930s-era 6-inch cast iron main with 12-inch PVC ahead of a road improvement project there.

“I’m so proud of our employees and contractors for the work they do every day to keep life flowing for our community during this crisis – water service for hygiene, hospitals, sanitation, fire protection, and for our customers at home. Many of our employees are working double duty taking care of our customers and their own families, and we thank them for rising to this unprecedented challenge,” Dewey continued. “As an essential employer we have taken many steps to protect and support our employees during this crisis, including limiting interactions with customers and fellow employees to help with social distancing.”

To help protect employees and contractors, Missouri American Water is asking customers to follow CDC social distancing guidelines and refrain from approaching workers in the field. If a customer sees a crew performing work nearby and wishes to ask a question about it, they are encouraged to visit https://amwater.com/moaw/ or the company’s Facebook or Twitter pages, or call Customer Service at (866) 430-0820.

The water delivered from Missouri American Water’s four St. Louis-area treatment plants remains safe to drink and continues to meet or exceed all state and federal requirements. The company’s drinking water treatment barriers provide protection that includes filtration and disinfection of our water supplies, and these treatments are effective in removing and/or inactivating viruses.
