Missouri American Water Working with MoDOT on Water Distribution System Improvements Near I-270 in North St. Louis County

ST. LOUIS (April 20, 2020) – Missouri American Water is working with the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) along the I-270 corridor in North St. Louis County on a number of water system improvement projects ahead of area road projects.

Most of the projects involve replacing and upsizing water mains that are nearing the end of their useful life, or removing aging mains from service and replacing them with new mains in conjunction with MoDOT project plans.

Below are details of some of the projects totaling nearly $2.86 million, which have either already started or will begin soon and are expected to run through May:

Pershall and Dunn Rd. will see 3,700 feet of 16-inch cast iron main from the 1950s replaced with 24-inch ductile iron main. Construction has recently started on the Pershall Rd. side.

East of Old Halls Ferry will see 5,600 feet of 16-inch cast iron water main replaced, while we install 1,100 feet of 24-inch ductile iron main inside 275 feet of 36-inch casing. The casing helps support and reinforce the main as it travels beneath I-270. Additional work will extend crossings at Landseer Dr. and Vorhof Dr. Some construction has recently begun on this portion of the project.

McCluer High School work will include replacing 870 feet of 6-inch main that connects the school to nearby water mains and establishing a new service connection to a 12-inch main on New Florissant Rd.

Dunn Rd. and Bellefontaine Rd. round-about relocation will involve Missouri American Water replacing 900 feet of 16-inch cast iron water main from 1952 with 16-inch ductile iron main.

Multiple additional projects in the area are still in the design phase and will be scheduled in conjunction with MoDOT plans for the area through the end of 2020.

“Working in partnership with an entity like MoDOT helps ensure that we can continue to deliver clean, safe, reliable water to our customers while keeping the costs of necessary investment in our water system as low as possible,” said Debbie Dewey, Missouri American Water President. “When road construction is planned, it gives our team at Missouri American Water the opportunity to replace mains that are nearing the end of their useful life without having to worry about disturbing newly constructed roads. We can do our work first, and MoDOT can follow with confidence that our new water mains will integrate nicely with their construction plans. It is a win-win for both organizations, our customers and drivers.”

Missouri American Water is continuing its essential work to provide safe and reliable drinking water to St. Louis County customers during the ongoing health crisis. The company asks customers to follow social distancing recommendations issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by keeping at least 6 feet (2 meters) between our employees and customers. For any questions about service, customers can call the Missouri American Water customer service center at 866-430-0820. Representatives are available weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to assist with questions and 24/7 for emergencies.

“We are proud of the ongoing efforts of our employees during this challenging time, and appreciate our customers practicing social distancing to help keep our workers safe when they’re in the field,” Dewey said.

Work on these projects generally will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. During construction, nearby customers might experience temporary water service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower-than-normal water pressure. For more information, contact Missouri American Water at 866-430-0820.

Once a main is replaced, contractors for Missouri American Water will construct temporary road patches to allow traffic flow. Permanent road repair, as well as restoration of any other yard and property damage caused by the work, will begin within 90 days of the main’s replacement. This allows for the ground to properly settle so that restoration work is successful. More information about restoration can be found on the Missouri American Water website at: https://amwater.com/moaw/customer-service-billing/do-you-have-property-damage.
