New York American Water Announces Emergency Responder Grant Program

Merrick, NY (February 14, 2020)—New York American Water is proud to announce its 2020 grant program for volunteer fire departments and emergency responders located in the Company’s service territory. Each year, this grant funding supports the commitment and bravery of volunteer firefighters and first responders in the local community by supporting the tools, training and materials needed to ensure their success and safety. The company will be providing four $1,000 grants in 2020.

“We are immensely proud to offer an opportunity to provide assistance to the brave men and women who selflessly volunteer their time to ensure the safety of our communities,” said Richard Kern, New York American Water’s Senior Production Manager. “I’ve personally been a volunteer firefighter for more than 35 years and know, firsthand, the importance of training programs and equipment maintenance. It is an honor to be able to give back to these hard-working individuals who do so much for all of us.”

Grants that are awarded will be used to cover the costs associated with purchasing personal protective gear, firefighting tools, water handling equipment, communications equipment, training and related activities, and materials that support volunteer firefighter and emergency responder operations (e.g., ambulance and first aid squads). The grant may also be used as reimbursement for specific fire training classes, including the cost of training manuals and student workbooks. Regional or countywide applications are encouraged to maximize the number of fire and emergency organizations that would benefit from the grants.

To qualify, organizations must submit an application, complete with the following information:

  • Contact information, including name and phone number.
  • Description of the organization(s) seeking support, including company name, address of company and county in which the company is located.
  • Overview of the specific project to be funded.
  • Grant amount requested.
  • Problem/challenges that the project will address.
  • Timeframe for implementation of the project.
  • Summary of other sources being approached for support of the project.
  • In addition to the letter of application, a project budget should be included.

The maximum grant amount awarded to any organization is $1,000, and the deadline to apply is April 6, 2020. Interested applicants can find more information and apply online at, under News and Community, Community Involvement. Grant recipients will be notified in the weeks following the deadline.
