Major Water Main Upgrade Underway in City of Monongahela

Pennsylvania American Water announces $644,000 project to replace 1,300 feet of main

McMurray, Pa. (May 1, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of a more than $644,000 water line upgrade project in the City of Monongahela to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions and increase water flows for firefighting.

“Providing reliable service to our customers means making continuous investments in our infrastructure,” said Tiffany Reed, senior manager of operations for Pennsylvania American Water. “We prioritize projects based on number of criteria, including the need for larger mains to handle system demands, age of existing pipe and history of main breaks or service interruptions.”

The project, which began this week, includes installing 1,300 feet of new eight-inch ductile iron pipe along Second Street, from West Main Street to Union Street, replacing existing water main that was installed in the 1950s.

Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the main installation, including connecting all customer service lines to the new mains, along with final restoration and paving, later this summer.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. For more information, contact Pennsylvania American Water’s customer service center at 1-800-565-7292.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
