Pennsylvania American Water Announces $1 Million Water Line Upgrade Projects in Northumberland County

More than 3,900 feet of pipe to be replaced in Northumberland Borough and Point Township

MILTON, Pa. (March 26, 2025) Pennsylvania American Water announced the start of a more than $1 million project to replace over 3,900 feet of water mains in its Northumberland County service area. The projects will improve customer reliability, reduce service disruptions and increase water flows for firefighting. The pipes, dating back to 1950, will be replaced with a new, and in some cases, larger-diameter main.

“Ensuring we continue to deliver safe and reliable drinking water means continuously re-investing in the pipes and infrastructure that delivers the water from our plant to your home,” said Jon Prawdzik, senior manager of operations at Pennsylvania American Water. “Projects like the Queen Street and Strawbridge Road main replacements will ensure that we are not only increasing the volume of water we can deliver but also doing so with higher reliability and safety.”

The project, which has already begun, involves company contractors replacing more than 2,400 feet of existing smaller-diameter pipe with new eight-inch ductile iron mains, valves, hydrants and service lines along Queen Street, from 8th Street to 16th Street in Point Township.

Once work has been completed on Queen Street, company contractors will begin replacing a 1,500-foot section of main along Strawbridge Road, from Horizon Avenue to 5th Street in Northumberland Borough.

Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the water main installation, including connecting all customer service lines to the new mains, by the end of July, with final restoration and paving scheduled for fall.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower-than-normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the duration of these temporary inconveniences. To maintain worksite safety, Pennsylvania American Water asks that members of the public do not approach its employees or contractors. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
