Pennsylvania American Water Announces $2M+ in Berks County System Upgrades

Main replacements in Exeter Township, Sinking Spring Borough, and Spring Township will improve water and wastewater service for customers

Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Feb. 28, 2022) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of construction to replace more than one mile of water and wastewater main in Berks County to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions, and increase water flows for firefighting. The cost of the system improvements, which replace 5,800 feet of main dating back to the 1950s, is $2,150,000.

Pennsylvania American Water contractors recently began several projects in Exeter Township, Sinking Spring Borough, and Spring Township, with targeted completion by the end of May and final restoration and paving scheduled within 90 days of completion:

  • Exeter Township:
    • A $600,000 project will replace 800 feet of aging 6-inch cast iron water main with new 8-inch ductile iron main and 200 feet of aging 8-inch vitrified clay sewer main with new 8-inche PVC main. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saint Lawrence Avenue (aka Boyertown Pike) between Oley Turnpike Road and Jacksonwalk Avenue. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction.
    • A $350,000 project will replace 1,000 feet of aging 6-inch cast iron water main with new 6-inch ductile iron main. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Glen Road from Hartline Avenue to the dead end and Jefferson Drive from Hartline Avenue to the dead end. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction.

  • Sinking Spring Borough: A $950,000 project will replace 3,050 feet of aging water main with new 4-, 8-, and 12-inch ductile iron main and include new copper water supply services for customers. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Ruth Street from Park Avenue to Woodrow Avenue, Keller Avenue from Ruth Street to Sunset Road, and Evans Avenue from Ruth Street to the dead end. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction.

  • Spring Township: A $250,000 project will replace 700 feet of aging cast iron water main with new 8-inch ductile iron main and include new copper water supply services for customers. Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Burkey Drive between Bressler Drive and Evergreen Drive. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower than normal water pressure. These infrastructure upgrade projects are not only an important investment in public health and safety, but they also help support the economic health of the communities served by Pennsylvania American Water. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy.
