Pennsylvania American Water Announces $5.4 Million in Washington County Water System Upgrades
Nearly two miles of water main to be replaced in April and May
McMurray, Pa. (March 10, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced the start of several improvement projects totaling$5.4 million that will replace two miles of water main in Washington County to improve reliability for customers, reduce service disruptions and increase water flows for firefighting.
"Providing reliable service to our customers means making continuous investments in our infrastructure,” said Tiffany Reed, senior manager of operations, Pennsylvania American Water. “We prioritize projects based on number of criteria, including the need for larger mains to handle system demands, age of existing pipe and history of main breaks or service interruptions.”
During the projects, including several that started this month, company contractors will install new eight- and 12-inch ductile iron pipes, replacing aged water mains that was installed in the 1950s in the following municipalities:
Smith Township
- Eleanor Street (from Charles Street to Townsite Street)
- East Second Avenue (from Townsite Street to the dead end)
- Louise Street (from Charles Street to the dead end)
- Fourth Street (from Townsite Street to the dead end)
- Townsite Street (from Langeloth Road to Old Oak Avenue)
- Langeloth Road (from Center Avenue to Townsite Street)
- Silver Maple Street (from Townsite Street to Broadway Street)
- Old Oak Avenue (from Townsite Street to 223 Old Oak Ave.)
- American Avenue (from Townsite Street to Broadway Street)
Canonsburg Borough
- East Pitt Street (North Central Avenue to Tannehill Street)
- Right of way from East Pitt Street to Spence Street)
Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place during construction. The company expects to complete the main installation, including connecting all customer service lines to the new mains, along with final restoration and paving, later this summer.
During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower than normal water pressure. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $675 million in 2024 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,125 jobs through these continued investments.
