Pennsylvania American Water Announces $550,000 Water Line Upgrade Project in Steelton
More than 2,200 feet of aging pipe to be replaced to improve reliability
Pennsylvania American Water announced the start of a $522,000 project to replace more than 2,200 feet of water main in Steelton, Dauphin County. The project will enhance customer reliability and minimize service disruptions. The aging pipes, dating back to 1920, will be replaced with a new, 12-inch ductile iron main.
“Investing in our water system infrastructure doesn’t just mean fixing and replacing old pipes,” said Robert Banzaca, field operations and construction supervisor at Pennsylvania American Water. “These projects help protect public health, support economic growth and ensure safe, reliable drinking water for the Steelton community.”
The project, which recently began, involves company contractors replacing the main on Swatara Street between Terrace Avenue and Reynders Street. An additional portion of this project will include replacing main along the company’s easement on the Steelton-Highspire School District property.
This main replacement project is in addition to a more than $10 million investment being made through the Steelton Water Treatment Plant filter improvement project and the Steelton booster pump station replacement project, both of which are nearing completion, with final work and permitting currently underway.
Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Traffic restrictions will be in place as needed during construction for worker and community safety. The company expects to complete the project by the end of July, before the start of classes at Steelton-Highspire School District.
During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower-than-normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the duration of these temporary inconveniences. To maintain worksite safety, Pennsylvania American Water asks that members of the public do not approach its employees or contractors. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy.
