Pennsylvania American Water Completes $6.1 Million in Sewer Line Upgrades in Scranton and Dunmore

Projects replaced more than four miles of sewer pipe

SCRANTON, Pa. (January 23, 2025) – Pennsylvania American Water recently completed sewer line upgrades along 12 streets in the City of Scranton and Dunmore Borough. The upgrades, which began in the spring of 2024 and cost approximately $6.1 million, included replacing or rehabilitating nearly 24,000 feet, approximately 4.5 miles, of sewer pipe in the collection system.

“Our upgrade projects are a combination of replacing pipe in some areas and rehabilitating pipe through slip-lining in other areas,” said Matt White, Pennsylvania American Water senior superintendent of wastewater operations.  “Slip-lining pipe restores the pipe to like-new condition and adds another 50-75 years of useful life to the pipe.”

Work was completed along the following streets:

  • Scranton
    • Pittston Avenue between Kane and Sanders streets
    • Sanders Street from Pittston to Birney avenues
    • Aswell Court between Fellows Avenue and Luzerne Street
    • Garwood Drive from Pennwood to Park Drive
    • Dickson Avenue between Green Ridge and Electric streets
    • South Main Avenue from Regan Place to Eynon Street
    • North Main Avenue from Oak Street to Love Road
    • North Lincoln Avenue between Crossin Court and North Sumner Avenue
    • Pen-Y-Bryn Drive
    • West Parker Street
  • Dunmore
    • Dunmore Cemetery between Forest Hill Cemetery and Blakely Street
    • Center Street between Smith and Gilroy streets

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety, it also helps support the economic health of local communities. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $688 million in 2024 alone to improve water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 10,300 jobs through these continued investments.
