Pennsylvania American Water Completes $7 Million Scranton-area Storage Tank Project
SCRANTON, Pa. (December 19, 2024) – Pennsylvania American Water today announced completion of its newest distribution storage tank, located at the company’s Lake Scranton Water Treatment Plant in Roaring Brook Township. Contractors recently completed the 3.5-gallon structure to provide additional storage capacity and reliability for customers.
The new tank, costing approximately $7 million, is one of 63 storage tanks operated by Pennsylvania American Water to supply drinking water to 70 municipalities in Lackawanna and Luzerne counties. The tank is adjacent to two existing 2.5-million-gallon steel storage tanks.
“Storage tanks are a critical part of our water infrastructure because they help provide reliable water supply for the community,” said Sarah Mihalick, Pennsylvania American Water engineering project manager. “Tanks provide system capacity to residential and commercial customers and adequate pressure and fire protection.”
Construction of the tank began in January 2024. The new tank is constructed of 1,905 cubic yards of concrete. Due to the size of the tank, concrete was used over traditional steel and provides a longer life span for the structure of approximately 80-100 years. Constructed inside the tank are baffling and diffuser walls that improve water mixing and disinfection.
The company expects to fill and bring the tank into service by early January. During construction, the company maintained normal operations and customers experienced no water service disruptions. The tanks at the Lake Scranton plant serve customers in the 14 communities: Scranton; Archbald; Blakely; Dickson City; Dunmore; Jessup; Moosic; Old Forge; Olyphant; Taylor; Throop; North Abington Township; South Abington Township; and Scott Township.
