Students from Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy to Visit Tennessee American Water Plant for National Imagine a Day without Water
Dateline City:
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.
Campaign to Raise Awareness about Importance of Drinking Water Infrastructure
Tennessee American Water will host students from Chattanooga Girls
Leadership Academy (CGLA) on Imagine
a Day Without Water, an effort to educate the public about the water
infrastructure crisis currently facing the United States. Organized by
the Value of Water Coalition, hundreds of organizations across the
country will partake in events on September 15 to raise awareness
about the crucial need for investment to ensure that no community in
America is left without water and the infrastructure that brings it to
and from homes and businesses.
“Tennessee American Water recognizes that continuous investment in the
nation’s drinking water is essential to securing a bright and prosperous
future for generations to come,” said Valoria Armstrong, President of
Tennessee American Water. “Water is essential to life and a reliable
drinking water system assures that our communities thrive. We think it’s
important to share the story of drinking water and the challenges of
aging infrastructure.”
“Giving our students hands-on experiences like participating in Imagine
a Day Without Water at Tennessee American Water is something we
incorporate in our learning,” said Justin Booker, Chattanooga Girls
Leadership Academy’s Director of Community Engagement. “This particular
group of students are conducting a year-long project on aquaponics.
Their visit to the water plant will help give them a big picture
understanding of how the water is connected to many aspects of our
lives.”
The CGLA students will take a tour on Thursday, September 15, at 9 a.m.
followed by activities and discussion at 10 a.m. in the Meter Shop break
room. This segment will focus on water sources, the role each of us
plays in protecting our water and why investments in drinking water
systems are important to society. Media is invited to attend the tour or
activities portion.
A water main breaks somewhere in America every two minutes. The American
Society of Civil Engineers gave a grade of “D” to the country’s drinking
water and wastewater infrastructure. Without further investments, these
systems will experience more frequent failures and disruptions as they
try to keep up with the needs of both the urban and rural areas they
serve.
