Virginia American Water Proudly Recognizes American Water Charitable Foundation 2025 Water and Environment Grantees
Grants totaling $165,200 awarded to non-profit organizations in Virginia American Water’s Footprint
ALEXANDRIA, VA (May 20, 2025) – The American Water Charitable Foundation, a philanthropic non-profit organization established by American Water, the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the U.S., has awarded Water and Environment grants totaling $165,200 to three organizations in communities served by Virginia American Water.
“We are proud to again partner with the American Water Charitable Foundation in granting funding to organizations that share our commitment to environmental sustainability,” said Laura Runkle, President, Virginia American Water. “Their efforts to promote responsible use and protection of natural resources are critical to the work our employees do every day. As we work to provide water and wastewater services to our customers, being a steward of the environment is a fundamental part of the positive impact we have in the communities we serve.”
Water and Environment grants totaling $165,200 have been awarded to the following organizations:
- Four Mile Run Conservatory Foundation – $77,000 to build an ADA-accessible, public kayak and canoe launch at lower Four Mile Run in Alexandria.
- Friends of the Occoquan – $18,200 to promote the use of rain barrels and community gardens to control sedimentation and pollution in Prince William County.
- Historic Hopewell Foundation – $70,000 to rebuild a public pier on the Appomattox River and encourage regrowth of native habitats.
"We are so thrilled and appreciative to have received funding from the American Water Charitable Foundation to help build a public and ADA-accessible launch for kayaks and canoes at lower Four Mile Run in Alexandria — the first such launch in the DC metro area. Each year, the Virginia American Water team volunteers for our kayak clean-up program to help keep Four Mile Run litter-free, and we’re happy to have the Foundation as a supporter of our efforts to beautify and improve Four Mile Run Park", said Kurt Moser, president of the Four Mile Run Conservatory Foundation.
The Water and Environment grants are part of the American Water Charitable Foundation’s Keep Communities Flowing Program, focusing on three pillars of giving: Water, People and Communities.
“The American Water Charitable Foundation is proud to invest in organizations and programs that focus on clean water, conservation, environmental education, climate variability and water-based recreation,” said Carrie Williams, President, American Water Charitable Foundation. “We take pride in furthering American Water’s ongoing commitment to being a good neighbor and trusted partner in the community."
