Dateline City:
HOPEWELL, Va.

Customers are reminded to boil water as it returns to their taps

Tanker water distribution at Carter G. Woodson Middle School until 8 p.m. tonight; Water distribution available 8 a.m., Sunday, April 1

HOPEWELL, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--As a result of a loss of water pressure due to an interruption in the operation of Virginia American Water’s Hopewell treatment facility, the company’s Hopewell district is still under a boil water advisory.

Electricity to the water pumping system at the company’s Hopewell treatment facility has been restored through auxiliary power, and water pressure is increasing in the distribution system. As water is restored, business and residential customers are asked to continue to conserve water, and avoid using water for non-essential practices, such as laundry. Virginia American Water will update customers on progress within 24 hours.

“We have made significant progress in restoring our systems today and we are hopeful that we will be able to approve a return to usual water use soon. However, customers should continue to boil water before using for consumption, as well as continue to conserve water and avoid non-essential uses,” said Barry Suits, president, Virginia American Water.

On Friday, March 30, Virginia American Water issued a precautionary boil water advisory for all of its customers in the City of Hopewell as well as the subdivisions of New Birchett Estates, Cedar Creek, Cedar Creek West, Strattford Woods and Mullberry Woods in Prince George County.

A boil water advisory is a standard precaution that is taken whenever there is loss of pressure in water mains. Virginia American Water will inform all customers when they no longer need to boil water.

Virginia American Water is providing water to customers as follows:

  • Bottled water distribution will continue to be available at Hopewell High School, 400 S. Mesa Drive, through 5 p.m. today, and beginning at 8 a.m. on Sunday, April 1. In addition to cases of single-serve bottles of water, the company is also distributing 3-gallon jugs, which can be refilled at the water tanker filling stations.
  • Customers can bring their own containers to fill from clean water tankers today through 8 p.m., and again on Sunday, April 1, beginning at 8 a.m. at Carter G. Woodson Middle School, 1000 Winston Churchill Drive. Customers need to bring their own clean containers to fill.

Virginia American Water also recommends the following steps:

  • Bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least one minute; allow to cool before using.
  • Throw away uncooked food or beverages or ice cubes if made with tap water during the day of the advisory (Friday, March 30).
  • Keep boiled water in the refrigerator for drinking.
  • Rinse hand-washed dishes for a minute in diluted bleach (one tablespoon of household bleach per gallon of tap water) or clean your dishes in a dishwasher using the hot wash cycle and dry cycle.
  • Do not swallow water while you are showering or bathing.
  • Provide pets with boiled water after cooling.
  • Do not use home filtering devices in place of boiling or using bottled water; most home water filters will not provide adequate protection from microorganisms.
  • Use only boiled water to treat minor injuries.

Virginia American Water is continuing to work to restore full water service to the Hopewell system as quickly and safely as possible. The company is coordinating with local and state officials. Please be advised that Virginia American Water is doing all it can to ensure that water is of the highest quality.

Updates will also be provided on the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages. If customers have any questions they may call 1-800-452-6863.
