West Virginia American Water Response to Flood-Related Operational Impacts Continues

Dateline City:
CHARLESTON, W.Va.

Water service restored to some customers; Water tankers deployed in Clendenin, Elkview and Winona

West Virginia American Water continues its emergency response to isolated operational impacts from this week’s flooding. All water treatment facilities are operating normally. Overnight, water service was restored to Crossings Mall in Elkview through a temporary water line and to the Wills Creek and Frame Road areas of Elkview through booster stations that have been re-started with generators or bypassed with temporary pumps.

Throughout the day, crews will continue to re-pressurize the water system in the Elkview area in sections between valves, identifying and repairing main breaks along the way and laying temporary lines across washed-out river and creek crossings. Crews are also working to remove debris and clean mud from booster stations and pressure reducing valves that can now be accessed for the first time.

Crews are also working to repair a water main break in the Cicerone and Allens Fork area of Sissonville and are connecting a generator to a small booster station on Pinch Ridge experiencing a power outage, which caused a water outage for a small number of customers this morning.

Potable water tankers are available at the following locations for customers to fill containers:

  • Dollar General on Maywood Avenue in Clendenin (Kanawha County)
  • Smith’s Foodfair in Clendenin (Kanawha County)
  • Frame Road in Elkview across from the DOH garage (Kanawha County)
  • Keeneys Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Winona (Fayette County)

After lending two water tankers to the West Virginia Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management to provide assistance to the flood-devastated communities of Richwood and Rainelle, West Virginia American Water procured additional tankers from its sister company in Pennsylvania and will be deploying these throughout the day to areas where water outages still exist. Updates on water tanker locations will be posted on the company’s website and Facebook page.
