New Jersey American Water Highlights Work Zone Awareness Week

CAMDEN, N.J. – APRIL 12, 2022 – New Jersey American Water is highlighting National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW), which runs from April 11 to April 15 this year.

NWZAW has been observed for more than 20 years and was launched as a public awareness campaign to help everyone understand they play a role in keeping motorists and roadway workers safe.

According to the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse, one work zone injury occurred approximately every 12 minutes in the US in 2020. One fatality occurred every 10 hours. There were 11 work zone fatalities in New Jersey in 2020, a decade high.[1]

“Our employees and contractor crews work in streets and on roadways every day, performing critical jobs to help us keep life flowing. We take their safety seriously, and train our crews to follow all safety protocols,” said Mark McDonough, President of New Jersey American Water. “Even so, working in roadways can present heightened risks, so we welcome the opportunity to spotlight the role we can all play in helping keep our crews safe and serving our customers every day.”

New Jersey American Water invests hundreds of millions of dollars in its infrastructure each year. This includes regular maintenance and upgrades to treatment plants, tanks, pump stations, miles of pipe, water and wastewater mains, fire hydrants and metering equipment.

New Jersey American Water has more than 50 crews working around the state on any given day. Whether they are working to upgrade water and wastewater infrastructure or performing routine maintenance and cleaning, keeping its crews safe is of paramount importance to New Jersey American Water.

For more information, New Jersey American Water created a video that provides motorists with simple and helpful tips on how they too can help keep the company’s employees and contractors and themselves safe in and around work zones.
