Pennsylvania American Water Announces $5.5 Million Punxsutawney Water System Upgrade

Crews will start the water main replacement project next week.

Punxsutawney, Pa. (Feb. 2, 2023) – Pennsylvania American Water announced today the start of construction to replace approximately 5 miles of aging water main in the Punxsutawney area to improve service reliability and fire protection for residents.

The cost of the system improvement is approximately $5.5 million. The more-than-a-century-old cast iron water main will be replaced with new ductile iron pipe along State Route 119.

Starting February 6, traffic will be limited to one southbound lane along State Route 119 between Rikers Road in Henderson Township and Smyers Street in Big Run. Crews will work weekdays between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.; traffic restrictions will be in place during construction.

The company expects to complete the main water installation, including connecting all customer service lines to the new mains, this spring, with final restoration and paving scheduled shortly after that.

This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and safety. It also helps support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $490 million in 2022 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 7,000 jobs.

During construction, customers might experience temporary service interruptions, discolored water, and/or lower-than-normal water pressure. Crews will work as quickly as possible to shorten the length of these temporary inconveniences. For more information, contact Pennsylvania American Water’s customer service center at 1-800-565-7292.
