Removal of Fluoride from Montrose System

Pennsylvania American Water received letters from both Bridgewater Township and the Borough of Montrose to discontinue the addition of fluoride to their drinking water. The motion was brought forth at the November 4, 2019 borough meeting and the January 6, 2020 township meeting.  Both councils unanimously approved the motion to terminate the practice of adding fluoride.

This notice serves as advanced notice to customers and medical professionals of the transition from a fluoridated to a non-fluoridated system.  The transition is expected to be complete in 2021.  Customers will not notice any changes in their service and will be notified when the transition is complete.

There is nothing you need to do as a consumer of the water; use your water as you normally would.  The removal of fluoride will not cause any adverse health effects, but if you have specific health concerns regarding the removal of fluoride from the drinking water, please consult your doctor.

Pennsylvania American Water is neutral on the issue of fluoridation of drinking water supplies. The company’s position is to abide by the wishes of the communities it serves regarding whether fluoride is added to the water supply.  In 2011, Pennsylvania American Water lowered the level of fluoride in the system to 0.7 milligrams per liter (mg/L), as recommended by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Pennsylvania American Water thanks residents for their patience and cooperation as we make this change.
