Illinois American Water to Conduct Flushing Program in Mt. Pulaski April 18-21

Work includes flushing of water mains and fire hydrants

Mt. Pulaski, Ill. (April 13, 2023) – From April 18-21, 2023, Illinois American Water will be conducting its annual flushing maintenance in the Mount Pulaski water system. During this period, fire hydrants will be checked, evaluated and maintained. The process of periodically flushing hydrants is essential in identifying fire hydrants in need of repair and maintaining optimal water quality throughout the water distribution system.
A few tips:

  • Customers could experience a temporary discoloration of water within their residence or dwelling during flushing. The removal of these deposits is critical in maintaining water quality. If you encounter discolored water during hydrant flushing, run water from the cold water tap only until discoloration subsides. This may require flushing of cold water from multiple taps.
  • Avoid doing laundry during, or shortly after, the hydrant flushing event.
  • If, after flushing from the cold-water tap(s), water pressure appears lower than normal, clean the faucet aerator. Mineral deposits may obstruct flow through the aerator (screen), resulting in lower pressure.

NOTE: The annual flushing program in the Lincoln District will be held later in 2023. A news release will be sent when the dates are confirmed.
