IOWA AMERICAN WATER TO BEGIN $250,000 WATER MAIN RELOCATION AND UPGRADE PROJECT IN BETTENDORF
Dateline City:
DAVENPORT, Iowa
Company will work in partnership with city to cost effectively upgrade infrastructure in advance of road widening project
Iowa American Water announced today that work to replace about three
blocks of aging water main along 18th Street in Bettendorf
will begin on June 15. The work is required in advance of a city-planned
street widening project on 18th Street from Avalon Court to
Spruce Hills Drive. The cost of this distribution system improvement is
approximately $250,000.
“This project will improve reliability for our customers by replacing
aging pipeline that has been in service for almost 60 years,” said Mary
Jane Midgett, director of operations.
The project will include relocation of approximately 1,600 feet of
8-inch water main from Avalon Court to Spruce Hills Drive. The water
main relocation is necessary to avoid conflicts with city street
improvements which are scheduled for that section of 18th
Street in spring, 2016. The new water main is being moved to a location
near the sidewalk on the west side of the street for ease of maintenance
in the future.
The work will begin at Spruce Hills Drive and progress south on 18th
Street to Avalon Court. Iowa American Water is completing the work this
summer while Bettendorf Middle School is out of session. The project
will continue for about six to eight weeks with completion prior to the
new school year. Traffic will be maintained in both directions
throughout the project; however, drivers are cautioned to slow down and
use caution while proceeding through the work zone. To avoid delays,
motorists may want to use an alternate route whenever possible. The
contractor for the project is Hawkeye Sewer & Water.
Pipeline replacement projects are selected on their community benefits,
including reducing water main breaks and improving the overall integrity
of the water system in the area. “Iowa American Water makes investments
such as this regularly to ensure high quality, reliable service while
delivering water to customers’ homes for about a penny per gallon,”
Midgett added. “We always partner with our service communities whenever
possible on projects such as this in an effort to work as cost
effectively as possible.”
The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency projects that a staggering
$385 billion is required to replace aging water infrastructure over the
next 20 years. These investments include replacing thousands of miles of
pipe and upgrades to treatment plants, storage tanks and other assets.
Iowa American Water’s investment in main replacement projects is an
example of continuous investments and improvements being made to the
water system to help meet the demands of today’s customers as well as
plan for the future. The company maintains approximately 153 miles of
water main in its Clinton District and another 680 miles in the Iowa
Quad Cities.
