Kentucky American Water Announces 2023 Environmental Grant Program Recipient

Kentucky American Water has awarded a total of $5,000 to the recipient of the 2023 American Water Environmental Grant Program. The program supports innovative, community-based environmental projects that improve, restore or protect the watersheds, surface water and groundwater supplies within Kentucky American Water’s service area.

“As a leader in environmental stewardship, Kentucky American Water is helping to move our state toward a more sustainable future,” said Andy Lewis, vice president of operations. “By supporting community organizations through our annual Environmental Grant Program, our team is continuing to show our commitment to protecting the environment and enhancing the health of our watersheds.”

“Since 2006 Kentucky American Water has provided more than $252,000 in funds through this program alone to support community projects than preserve and protect the environment,” Lewis added. “We are pleased to support this year’s recipients and applaud their efforts.”

This year, Friends of Jacobson Park, in partnership with the Lakeside Golf Course and Friends of the Parks, will receive a grant of $5,000 in support of a project to create a riparian border along the reservoir to help keep fertilizer-rich stormwater runoff from entering the waterway. The project will be completed this year.

Friends of Jacobson Park was established in 2023 to help keep the 216 acres of Jacobson Park a clean and wildlife-friendly place for various education and recreation opportunities. Jacobson Park is one of the largest and most used parks in Lexington and holds a 46.3-acre lake, which Kentucky American Water uses as a water source. The Jacobson Park and Lakeside Golf Course properties were donated to the City of Lexington by Kentucky American Water in 2011. The park is named for Ernest “Jake” Jacobson, who served as the water company’s general manager from 1936 to 1966.
