Missouri American Water Pipe Replacement Project in North Joplin Improves Water System Reliability and Fire Protection

Joplin, MO (March 2, 2022) – With more than 530 miles of underground water pipe in Missouri American Water’s Joplin Operation, several projects will be completed in 2022 to replace pipes reaching the end of their useful life.  Crews are currently working in North Joplin to complete the third phase of replacing and upgrading pipe dating back to the 1950s.

This project includes replacing and upsizing water pipes on Trenton, Utica and Vandalia Streets, improving both service reliability and fire protection.  Missouri American Water will invest approximately $1 million to replace and upgrade about one mile of 2-inch pipe with 8-inch pipe.

“We strategically identify pipes in the water system that are aging and experiencing a significant amount of water main breaks,” said Matthew Barnhart, Senior Operations Manager. “The new larger water pipe improves the reliability of the water system and also provides additional flow for our local firefighters.”

In 2021, approximately five miles of pipe were replaced and upgraded.  This project in North Joplin is just one of the scheduled water system improvements in 2022.

Replacement work also includes valves, services, and fire hydrants within the area. Work on these projects typically goes from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. During construction, customers might experience temporary water service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower-than-normal water pressure. Weather-permitting, work should be complete by early spring.
