Missouri American Water Replacing Key Water Main in Clayton
S. Central Ave. water main to be replaced ahead of city road project
ST. LOUIS (April 13, 2020) – Missouri American Water is kicking off a key water main replacement project in Clayton this month to provide continued reliable service for residents and businesses in the county seat.
The project will take place in advance of a street project by the city of Clayton:
South Central Avenue, from Shaw Park Dr. to Carondelet Ave., where more than 1,200 feet of cast iron main from the 1960s will be replaced and upsized from 6 inches to 12-inch PVC.
“During this ongoing health crisis, it is important that our customers remain confident in our ability to deliver clean, safe, reliable water, and investments in our system like this water main replacement project are what allow us to do that,” said Debbie Dewey, President of Missouri American Water. “We are glad to work with leaders in the city of Clayton to perform our work ahead of their road project to minimize inconvenience and save customers money.”
The company is investing approximately $92 million in 2020 to replace aging water mains in St. Louis County.
“I am so proud of our employees and contractors for the essential work they do every day to keep life flowing for our community during this crisis,” Dewey said. “Many of our employees are working double duty taking care of our customers and their own families, and we thank them for rising to this unprecedented challenge. As an essential employer we have taken many steps to protect and support our employees during this crisis, including limiting interactions with customers and fellow employees to help with social distancing.”
To help protect employees and contractors, Missouri American Water is asking customers to follow CDC social distancing guidelines and refrain from approaching workers in the field. Work on this project generally will take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. During construction, customers might experience temporary water service interruptions, discolored water and/or lower-than-normal water pressure. Once a main is replaced, contractors for Missouri American Water will construct temporary road patches to allow traffic flow. Permanent road repair, as well as restoration of any other yard and property damage caused by the work, will begin within 90 days of the main’s replacement. This allows for the ground to properly settle so that restoration work is successful.
