New York American Water Urges Water Conservation

Technology, Tools and Other Tips to Assist Customers

Merrick, NY (May 27, 2021)—The irrigation season is in full swing and this early stretch of warm, dry weather has New York American Water urging customers to implement water-saving measures to reduce consumption and lower their bills. Demand for water has increased significantly over the last few weeks, surpassing pumping levels for the same time period in 2020. The cause for the increased demand for water is due to irrigation systems.

“Our supply and distribution system is always stressed this time of year, but the recent increase in usage due to the abnormally dry, warm weather is leading us to raise the warning flag early in the season,” said New York American Water’s President Lynda DiMenna. “Our water systems are robust, but it is becoming more difficult to meet an ever-growing demand. By reducing irrigation consumption, you will save a significant amount on your water bill, help alleviate pressure issues in your community and protect our region’s most precious natural resource.”

Residents with sprinkler systems who have not made the switch to a smart irrigation controller are strongly encouraged to take advantage of New York American Water’s program for this discounted, water-saving technology. In partnership with Rachio, a leading supplier of smart irrigation technology, qualifying New York American Water customers can purchase the Rachio 3 smart controller at the discounted price of $99 plus tax, a reduction from the retail price of $230. While the equipment installation is considered to be “Do It Yourself,” a partnership with professional installers has been created to offer a fixed installation fee of $150. To take advantage of this program, please visit go.rachio.com/nyamwater.

“We have already seen more than 1,850 customers take advantage of this first-come, first-served smart controller technology program,” said New York American Water’s External Affairs Manager Lee Mueller. “Customers are seeing a savings of up to 30 percent when they switch to these devices, which means the device is paying for itself within the first year of installation. Not to mention, their lawns and gardens continue to thrive while they enjoy a much lower bill.”

While switching to a smart irrigation controller provides the single greatest way to reduce peak usage and save on customers’ water bills, there are many other conservation measures available through New York American Water’s H2O Control Toolbox. The host of tools and other recommended changes to water usage habits are made available to customers at www.nyamwater.com/conservation.
