Pennsylvania American Water Hosts Public Officials for Tour of $2.6 Million Fayette County Water Treatment System Upgrade

Brownsville, Pa. (Aug. 4, 2023) – Pennsylvania American Water representatives joined state and local officials today to tour infrastructure improvements at the company’s Hiller Reservoir in Luzerne Township, Fayette County.

“Investing in upgrades to reservoirs and storage tanks is crucial for maintaining water pressure and helping ensure adequate reserves for fire protection,” said Pennsylvania American Water Director of Operations Jake Gentile. “These investments benefit our customers, contribute to the community’s growth, and strengthen the entire system's resilience.”

The $2.6 million investment includes the construction of a new 500,000-gallon water storage tank, which was necessary to support the installation of a new cover, liner, and rehabilitation of the Hiller Reservoir. These upgrades will help provide continued production of high-quality drinking water and prevent pollutants or foreign objects from entering the reservoir. The new water storage tank and upgraded Hiller reservoir will have a total capacity of 3.5 million gallons.

“The event presented a remarkable chance to witness Pennsylvania American Water's significant investments,” said Luzerne Township Supervisor Joe Miske. “Safe, clean, and reliable drinking water is paramount for our residents.”

The Hiller facility serves approximately 4,600 customers in Brownsville Borough, West Brownsville, California, Coal Center, Brownsville Township, Luzerne, Jefferson, and Redstone. Construction of the water storage tank began during the summer of 2022 and was completed in July. The reservoir lining project will begin in the coming weeks and is expected to be completed this fall.

This infrastructure upgrade project is an essential investment in public health and safety and helps support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $490 million in 2022 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 7,000 jobs through these continued investments.

Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and wastewater services to approximately 2.3 million people.
