Pennsylvania American Water Hosts Public Officials for Tour of $5.5 Million Jefferson County Water Treatment System Upgrade

Punxsutawney, Pa. (July 17, 2023) – Pennsylvania American Water representatives today joined state and local officials to tour infrastructure improvements at the company’s West End Reservoir in Punxsutawney, Jefferson County.

“This investment will replace an approximately 100-year-old reservoir with new tanks that will improve reliability and help to ensure adequate reserves for fire protection,” said Pennsylvania American Water Senior Manager of Operations Jon Natale. “These investments benefit our customers, contribute to the community’s growth, and strengthen the entire system's resilience.”

The $5.5 million investment includes the construction of two new 750,000-gallon water storage tanks on the west side of Punxsutawney. These upgrades will ensure the continued production of high-quality drinking water and prevent pollutants or foreign objects from entering the reservoir.

Construction of a 500,000-gallon elevated water storage tank located on the south side of Punxsutawney will begin later this summer. The approximately $4.2 million investment will provide additional system resiliency and sustainability of operations during events or circumstances that could interrupt service.

"Dependable water infrastructure plays a vital role in ensuring healthy and vibrant communities," said Jefferson County Commissioner Herb Bullers. "We appreciate the chance to gain insights into Pennsylvania American Water's proactive approach to meeting the drinking water requirements of local communities."

This year, the company is investing approximately $6.5 million to replace aging and undersized water mains in the Punxsutawney area. The approximately 6.5 miles of new water main will improve service reliability and fire protection.

This infrastructure upgrade project is an essential investment in public health and safety and helps support the economic health of the communities we serve. Economic impact studies show that for every $1 million invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $490 million in 2022 alone to improve our water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 7,000 jobs through these continued investments.

Pennsylvania American Water serves approximately 3,600 Jefferson County customers in Punxsutawney and Big Run Boroughs and portions of Bell, Gaskills, Young, and McCalmont Townships.

Pennsylvania American Water, a subsidiary of American Water (NYSE: AWK), is the largest investor-owned water utility in the state, providing high-quality and reliable water and wastewater services to approximately 2.3 million people.
