Tennessee American Water to Perform Annual Hydrant Flushing Maintenance Program

Water System Flushing to Begin Week of September 12, 2022

Chattanooga, Tenn. (September 9, 2022) – Tennessee American Water will begin its annual water system flushing program throughout its water system serving Chattanooga, East Ridge, Red Bank, Lookout Mountain, GA and TN, and Rossville, GA, starting the week of September 12th. Flushing will take place on weekdays, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for approximately four weeks.

Periodic flushing is essential to providing excellent water quality to customers because it removes natural sediment that builds up in water pipes over time. The company also flushes its hydrants to confirm they are operational and to check fire flows in the system to help ensure fire protection in the community.

“Customers count on us to provide high-quality water for their comfort, sanitation and fire protection,” said Doug Wagner, vice president of operations.  “In addition to continuous infrastructure renewal like main replacements, essential maintenance activities such as our annual hydrant flushing program are key to providing our customers with high-quality drinking water.”

Tennessee American Water crews will open a selection of fire hydrants throughout Tennessee American Water’s distribution system for several minutes. When crews are flushing nearby, customers may experience a temporary drop in water pressure or slight discoloration of their water. Customers with discolored water should open a cold water spigot, like a hose bib or their bathtub, until the water clears. Any water discoloration or low-pressure should last only a short time.
