Hopewell Water Treatment Plant Awarded ACEC Virginia 2023 Engineering Excellence Merit Award

Industrial Pump Station and Chemical/UV Facility Recognized as Exceptional Project

Alexandria, VA (February 14, 2023) – Virginia American Water’s Hopewell Water Treatment Plant and its Engineering Consulting firm, Gannett Fleming, have received The American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia’s (ACEC Virginia) Engineering Excellence Merit Award. The award was announced during the 2023 Engineering Excellence Awards gala on February 2 in Richmond, VA. Winners of the ACEC Virginia Engineering Excellence Awards are selected for demonstrating an exceptional degree of innovation, complexity, achievement and value.

Safety, service reliability, energy efficiency, and taste and odor control were all top of mind when Virginia American Water initiated facility improvements to the industrial pump station and ultraviolet (UV) facility at the century-old Hopewell Water Treatment Plant. This plant provides high-quality drinking water service to approximately 9,600 customers, including 19 industrial customers, in the City of Hopewell, Virginia.

“Gannett Fleming was a key component in the planning and execution of this project,” says Kristina McGee, Director of Engineering, Virginia American Water. “By completing this project, we were able to meet compliance with the EPA’s LT2 rule and reduce potential taste and odor concerns in drinking water. We also removed chlorine and other gas systems, eliminating the use of potentially toxic gases in alignment with American Water’s safety goals. In addition, a new chemical containment area was constructed to help reduce risk to employees and the environment if a chemical spill were to occur during unloading or transferring.”

“The new UV disinfection facility is truly an engineering innovation,” says Jessica Hou, Vice President, Gannett Fleming. “It represents the first application of advanced oxidation process (AOP) using UV at a Virginia drinking water facility. We are incredibly fortunate to work with Virginia American Water to complete these award-winning projects that will significantly benefit their customers.”
