American Water Charitable Foundation, West Virginia American Water Announce $20,000 Grant to Support Celebration Station

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (July 7, 2021) – The American Water Charitable Foundation and West Virginia American Water announced today a $20,000 Keep Communities Flowing grant to renovate the Celebration Station community playground on Charleston’s historic East End. This project will replace the old playground equipment with modern, safer equipment under the direction of Kanawha County Schools.

“The American Water Charitable Foundation is proud to support communities served by American Water through the Keep Communities Flowing grant program,” said Carrie Williams, president of the American Water Charitable Foundation.  “We look forward to the community enjoying an updated and safe outdoor play space for many years to come.”

Nearly 26 years ago, thousands of volunteers came together to build the original Celebration Station playground on the East End. After years of use, the park has been in need of a complete renovation. Its future was uncertain until the American Water Charitable Foundation awarded this grant to The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation and the Charleston Rotary Club for the final funding needed to complete the renovations.

“The Charleston Rotary Club and the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation are happy to see this community treasure restored,” said Dr. Michelle Foster, CEO of the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation. “It is truly been a collaborative effort with many community partners. We appreciate American Water for demonstrating corporate responsibility and for being the top contributor to-date.”

The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation will partner with West Virginia American Water on this project throughout the renovation process. West Virginia American Water has a history with this community park as one of its service projects as part of the United Way of Central West Virginia’s annual Day of Caring. Other community partners on the Celebration Station project include Kanawha County Schools, the Charleston Rotary Club and the City of Charleston.

“West Virginia American Water is proud to provide employee volunteers and support the renovation efforts at Celebration Station,” said Robert Burton, president of West Virginia American Water. “This community facility is important for children and families across the city, as it provides a great opportunity to live a more active, healthier life.”

A ribbon cutting for the project will be scheduled in August, and new playground equipment is expected to be installed in October. The American Water Charitable Foundation previously awarded a Keep Communities Flowing grant in 2020 to the Friends of New River Gorge National River for a youth-focused water and soil testing program.
