Local Students Score Top Prizes in West Virginia American Water “Protect Our Watersheds” Art Contest

Charleston Montessori student captures top spot in annual art contest

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (May 14, 2020) – A Charleston Montessori student earned the top statewide prize in West Virginia American Water’s fifth annual “Protect Our Watersheds” Art Contest. The company received many entries from fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders across the state, despite schools being closed and students resorting to online instruction.

Charleston Montessori student Ellie Hoblitzell earned the grand prize for her artwork. The entry depicted a family fishing, kayaking, rafting and enjoying a clean watershed for many years to come.

Andon Pauley from Whitesville Elementary in Boone County placed second, and Faith Hale of Nichols Elementary in Cabell County placed third. All three students will receive bookstore gift cards for their winning entries.

“The ‘Protect Our Watersheds’ Art Contest is a creative, interactive way for students to learn about watershed protection and the part we all play in protecting our drinking water sources,” said West Virginia American Water President Robert Burton. “As future stewards of our water resources, it is important that we begin watershed education at an early age.”

As the grand prize winner, Hoblitzell will have her artwork featured on plantable wildflower seedembedded paper cards that will be distributed across the state by West Virginia American Water.
