Kentucky American Water Recognized for Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion

Kentucky American Water has been awarded a 2021 Diversity and Inclusion Award from the Kentucky/Tennessee Section of the American Water Works Association for its outstanding commitment to an inclusive and diverse workplace. The company received the award at a ceremony held earlier this month during the Kentucky/Tennessee Water Professionals Conference in Chattanooga, Tenn., attended by nearly 1,500 water industry professionals.

Kentucky American Water is a subsidiary of American Water, a company that views diversity as a vital element in creating an environment where differences are accepted and are important to the company’s success. American Water is committed to fostering an environment where employees can work safely, both physically and emotionally, generate great ideas, provide the best customer service, and make a difference in the communities the company serves.

The company’s commitment to inclusion and diversity strives to create an environment where each employee feels that they can bring their whole self. Inclusion and Diversity training at the company this year focuses on allyship and fosters further understanding on actionable ways to be an ally. Other examples of how the company is making inclusion and diversity a priority include starting meetings with an “I & D moment;” offering Employee Resource Business Groups that all employees are encouraged to participate in to support and raise awareness of employee groups such as female, Black/African American, LGBTQ+ and Disabilities; offering employee podcasts and other educational sessions on inclusion and diversity topics; providing regular opportunities to engage in activities related to monthly observances; promoting partnerships with diverse vendors and suppliers; and engaging with community organizations who support diversity and inclusion.

“At Kentucky American Water, we recognize that all employees bring unique perspectives, experiences, backgrounds and talents to the workplace,” said Nick Rowe, president of Kentucky American Water, “and those collective differences make us stronger and position us for future success. We value and promote diversity in our workforce and aim to reflect the communities we serve through the people we employ whenever possible.”

More information on American Water’s commitment to inclusion and diversity can be found in the company’s first annual Inclusion and Diversity Report.
