West Virginia American Water Proudly Recognizes American Water Charitable Foundation STEM Education Grantees

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (Feb. 23, 2023) – The American Water Charitable Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization established by American Water, the largest publicly traded U.S. water and wastewater utility company, recently announced two organizations were awarded a STEM (science, technology, education, math) education grant, supporting communities served by West Virginia American Water.

“Our future leaders in West Virginia are significantly better off and will be more prepared for their careers with strong science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills thanks to access to the outstanding programing provided by these community partners,” said Robert Burton, president of West Virginia American Water. “We appreciate the American Water Charitable Foundation investing in STEM-focused initiatives and events that make an impact in schools and communities across the state.”

The STEM Education grant is part of the American Water Charitable Foundation’s Keep Communities Flowing Grant Program, focusing on three pillars of giving: Water, People and Communities.

The American Water Charitable Foundation awarded $25,000 to the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences of West Virginia for its new Clay2Go Mobile Exhibit. The first of its kind in West Virginia, this STEM educational exhibit will travel throughout West Virginia to offer hands-on learning for all.

“The Clay Center is committed to being an educational resource for the entire state, and thanks to the American Water Charitable Foundation’s grant, we’re able to take our engaging, hands-on STEM exhibits to schools, community centers, malls and libraries across West Virginia,” said Al Najjar, president and CEO of the Clay Center. “Through activities like creating circuits, building bridges and using compasses, the first Clay2Go mobile exhibit brings STEM concepts to life and helps children discover that science is fun.”

The Marshall University Foundation was awarded $14,000 from the American Water Charitable Foundation for its 2023 West Virginia Makes Festival, an annual community-focused event that promotes innovative West Virginia-based STEM entrepreneurship.

“Thanks to the tremendous generosity of the American Water Charitable Foundation, people of all ages will have the opportunity to demonstrate their creations and ingenuity, engage in hands-on STEM activities and revel in the joys of discovery during the Mountain State’s largest celebration of creativity,” said Derek Scarbro, deputy director of the Robert C. Byrd Institute at Marshall University. “This support is another example of the American Water Charitable Foundation and West Virginia American Water’s commitment to strengthening our communities by investing in those it serves.”

“The American Water Charitable Foundation is pleased to partner with eligible nonprofit organizations across West Virginia American Water focused on youth development and educational programming,” said Carrie Williams, president, American Water Charitable Foundation. “Funding for the STEM Education grant helps support STEM-based curricular and extracurricular initiatives to help provide students equal access to high-quality learning they need to succeed.”
